Studies report that nearly 230 million people in the world are affected by atopic dermatitis commonly known as eczema, a chronic skin condition that can be both physically and emotionally challenging. It affects people of all ages and is characterized by redness, itching and inflammation.
This October, we celebrate Eczema Awareness Month, and we want to take this opportunity to cast a spotlight on this condition – its causes, symptoms and products that can help people with eczema relieve their struggles.
Join us on this journey of offering support by shattering the stigma surrounding eczema and fostering a community of compassion and acceptance for those living with this skin condition.
What Causes Eczema?
Eczema is not only caused by one thing, but it is often linked with the development of food and environmental allergies. It then develops further due to a defective skin barrier. Although not everyone who has eczema has a family member with the same condition, it increases the chances of a person getting it.
Factors like exposure to allergens, irritants and pollutants can also trigger eczema symptoms. An individual’s lifestyle has some effects too. Stress and dietary choices can influence the severity of this condition in some individuals.
Since the cause can vary from person to person, it makes eczema a complex condition to manage and treat.
Symptoms of Eczema
Atopic dermatitis can appear in every part of the body. It also varies depending on the person and can include the following:
- Dry and flaky skin - the affected skin may become dry and flaky, often developing patches of rough or scaly texture due to the skin’s inability to retain moisture.
- Itchiness – also referred to as “pruritus” or intense itching, is the main indication of eczema. Ranging from mild to severe, it usually leads to scratching which can worsen the condition.
- Red or swollen skin – eczema can cause areas of the skin to be red or inflamed. This is one of the early signs of eczematous flare-ups.
- Oozing and crusting – during severe eczema flares, the skin can become moist and may ooze clear or yellowish fluid. You may notice a crust forming when the discharge dries.
- Blisters or pustules – dyshidrotic eczema is a type of eczema that can cause the formation of tiny blisters on the palms, fingers, or soles of the feet.
- Thick skin – due to eczema scratching, skin can thicken over time. It is called “lichenification” which means the skin has thickened and become leathery.
Atopic dermatitis starts before the age of 5 and may continue into the teenage and adult years. It can flare and clear up for the time being, even for several years.
We suggest seeing a healthcare provider if you notice any symptoms mentioned above or feel uncomfortable that it starts to affect your day-to-day life.
Soothing Atopic Skin
In severe cases of eczema, prescription medications like topical steroids are prescribed by a dermatologist to manage inflammation. You can also resort to over-the-counter antihistamines to alleviate itching and improve your sleep quality.
Identifying what triggers your eczema can also help so you can avoid it, such as certain foods or irritants from harsh soaps and detergents.
Moisturizing regularly to keep the skin well-hydrated can prevent dryness and itchiness. In addition to moisturizers, you can use gentle cleansers and avoid hot water when washing so as not to strip the skin of its natural oils.
